7 Tips to Get Running and Stay Motivated

If ‘start running’ is one of your New Year’s Resolutions, read on! This month, we had the pleasure of speaking with our very own Running Coach, Fran Light, about how to get into running.

  1. Keep it Fun!
In the 7 years that Fran has been coaching beginner runners, she has found one rule to always be true: “keep it fun and you will continue to run.” While there are plenty of resources offering training programmes, guidance on choosing the right trainers, and tips on running technique, Fran emphasises that enjoyment is key to maintaining your running habit. Here are her tips for making your running journey a happy and joyful one.
  2. Every Run is a Gift
Even on days when you’re not feeling it, a run can add joy to your day. You might spot something new in your neighbourhood, see an adorable dog, or enjoy a stunning sunset. The key is to pay attention and look for the positive. Treat every run as a gift rather than a chore, and you’ll find yourself procrastinating less and returning home feeling enriched and happy.
  3. Mix it Up!
Establishing a running routine is beneficial, but following the same routine daily can lead to boredom. Add variety to keep your motivation high. Run different routes, reverse your usual route, or add side roads. If you usually listen to music, try running without headphones and engage with your surroundings. Run at different times of the day and set fun challenges for yourself, like saying hello to five passers-by or finding five different coloured doors.
  4. Buddy Up
While solo runs can be great, sometimes it’s good to chat. Joining a running club is a fantastic way to meet new running buddies. You can also pair up with a friend who runs. Agree to run at a pace that is comfortable for both of you to ensure an enjoyable experience.
  5. Banish Negative Self-Talk
Replace phrases like “I should go for a run” with “I want to go for a run.” This positive mindset shift can make a big difference in your motivation and enjoyment.
  6. Look After Yourself
Running isn’t fun if it hurts. Increase your chances of staying injury-free by cross-training, taking rest days, and doing a warm-up before every run and a cool-down afterwards. Take it slow and steady, and most importantly, just enjoy it!
