Stubbington 10k: A Stunning Success!
On Sunday, 12th January, the 2025 Stubbington 10k once again demonstrated why it’s such a popular event on the running calendar. As part of the Hampshire Road Race League (HRRL), the race attracts top club runners from across the county as well as locals. With 1,812 runners participating, this event is notoriously difficult to enter due to its high demand—and it’s easy to see why!
The Stubbington 10k is renowned for its picturesque landscape, fast course, and being one of the biggest races of its kind that the south coast has to offer.
Alton Runners had 29 members sporting the club’s iconic yellow vests, with many proudly debuting the new design for this year. The race was blessed with perfect conditions—cool, dry weather with no wind—ideal for fast times and strong performances.
There were some outstanding individual achievements on the day. Dylan Poulton was the first Alton male across the line, finishing 32nd overall. Dylan not only secured a personal best but also took 1st junior male—an incredible achievement in such a competitive field.
Meanwhile, Women's Captain Rachel Walsh delivered a phenomenal performance, finishing as the 9th female overall. Rachel secured a personal best and set a new club record in the process, showcasing her hard work and dedication.
A special congratulations also goes to Andrew Tarrant, who broke the club’s over-60s 10k record—a record that had stood for more than 20 years. This remarkable achievement is a testament to Andrew’s experience and determination. It was also lovely to see Andrew's daughter, Abbie Hook, return to running after having her daughter. Having Abbie back on the team added to the day's joy and camaraderie.
The day was a triumph for the club, with many personal bests achieved across the board. A special mention goes to Donna Mansfield, who completed her very first 10k—a fantastic milestone and a reminder of the supportive atmosphere within Alton Runners.
Congratulations to everyone who took part in this hugely popular race. Alton Runners were out in force and represented the club brilliantly! James Kidwell summed it up nicely: “The perfect conditions, cool and still, the course was flat. Nice to see so many happy, smiley people in yellow tops at the finish line. Well done Team Alton.”
The next race in the calendar is the 4th round of the Southern Cross Country League at Chawton House on Sunday, 19th January. Chawton House, which once belonged to Jane Austen's brother, Edward, provides a beautiful and historic setting for the 5-mile course. The route follows a variety of undulating tracks, paths, and trails around the Chawton House estate. The event, hosted by Alton Runners, is open to league club runners.
The HRRL continues next month with the Ryde 10 Mile race on the Isle of Wight, with 16 members signed up to represent Alton Runners.
